Christmas Traditions For Couples

You guys…we are officially less than 1 week away until Christmas! Cue the freak-out! I don’t know about you guys, but I am still working on my Christmas shopping (facepalm). I know, I know, nothing like waiting until the last minute, right?! Anyways, Ryan and I were talking lately about how special this Christmas will be for the two of us! With Baby Malone due in less than 4 months, we have been trying to soak up every last second we have as a family of two. As exciting as it will be to celebrate Christmas next year with our first child, I also think it’s important to cherish our last holiday season before becoming “Mom and Dad.”

It’s no surprise that Christmas is often all about the kids! Many families do everything in their power to make the holidays the most special time for their little ones. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t make Christmas memories with your spouse at the same time! With all the magic in the air this time of year, let’s all make an effort to establish some super fun memories and traditions with our other halves this holiday!

I absolutely LOVE hearing what holiday traditions other couples have that don’t necessarily include their kids, so here are a few of my favorite Christmas traditions that Ryan and I have established over the years!

Buy Each Other Ornaments

Whether you bought a new house, took a vacation, picked up a new hobby, or whatever the case, gift each other an ornament that reflects the year you had together. It’s so fun to look back on the year and remember all the fun and exciting things you did or accomplished together. Before you know it, you’ll have a tree full of memories that you can display each year!

Christmas Light Date Night

One of my absolute most favorite things to do this time of year is to hop in the car with Ryan and drive around to look at all the Christmas lights. Sometimes we even pack the car with hot chocolate and some of our favorite Christmas treats. Pop in some Christmas music and you have yourselves a fun and romantic date night!

Bake-Off

If you’re the competitive type like Ryan and me, I highly recommend having yourselves a Christmas bake-off! You can each pick out a holiday dessert to whip up and then have your friends or families vote for their favorite treat. Loser has to buy an extra Christmas present for the winner! Or better yet…loser has to clean up the kitchen when you’re all finished (haha). This could even be a fun tradition to start with your friends and have a couple’s bake-off!

Shop For Presents Together

Whether you like to brave the malls or shop online from the comfort of your own couch, I find it super fun and exciting to shop for Christmas presents with Ryan! When you can work together to brainstorm ideas for family members or friends, it really helps to get you in the holiday spirit. And I don’t know about you guys, but when Ryan and I find a really good Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale and score an awesome gift together, it almost gives us a high (haha).

Wrap Presents Together

Once you’ve completed your shopping, you can set aside a night to wrap everything together! I personally have a love-hate relationship with wrapping gifts- I’m not gonna lie to you, it’s definitely not my strong suit. But Ryan loves doing it and he gets really excited seeing all the gifts for everyone pile up!

Matching Christmas Jammies

This is one tradition my mom usually takes care of for everyone in the family. But, I absolutely ADORE having the family in matching pajamas around Christmas time. It’s always so fun and festive to give each other a new set of holiday jammies every year, and this is definitely something you and your spouse can do for each other every Christmas. You can even gift them to one another on Christmas Eve after your kids have gone to sleep!

Christmas Movie Night

Okay, I know this one is a given, but I had to include it on my list! I mean, who doesn’t love watching Christmas movies in December?! I am convinced there is nothing better! Pull out some of your all-time favorite Christmas movies, hop into your matching jammies and cuddle up on the couch while you watch them together. Maybe just stick to the classics and steer clear of those cheesy Hallmark movies that us women love so much! Your significant other will thank you for it later (haha).
