Hey friends!
I don’t know about you guys, but it seems like we went from winter to summer in a matter of days over here! All of the sudden, we are having 90 degree days and we are not complaining one bit. After what felt like the longest winter ever, I think we are (finally) heading into the summer season. Praise Jesus!
Whether you like to spend your summers camping, at the lake, on the beach, or just relaxing in your own backyard, there is one thing we all cannot escape…BUGS! Since no one likes to get bit my mosquitos or pull ticks off themselves, most of us spritz down our bodies with bug spray all summer long, right?! However, are you aware of the ingredients that are lurking in the conventional bug spray that you use? Many of us know the harmful effects DEET can have on our health, but if you are unaware, I highly encourage you to run a quick Google search. The results might shock you!
Personally, I was quite horrified when I read what these chemical ingredients can do to our health. It is definitely not something that I want to slather on mine or Ryan’s skin! This is why I started making my own Bug Spray! This particular bug spray that I want to share with you today is made with a few essential oils, witch hazel, and water. It’s super simple to make, works phenomenally, and even smells good, too! Since we are using pure ingredients to make this, you can feel good about what you’re putting on you and your family members’ skin. A product that is made with 100% pure ingredients and contains 0 chemicals or toxins!
Before we get to the recipe, I want to point out how important it is to consider the brand of oils you are using. It’s crucial to use essential oils that are the absolute best quality oils you can get your hands on. This way, you can rest assured knowing there are no chemical fillers or fragrances being absorbed into your skin. Otherwise, what would be the point of making a non-toxic bug spray, right?! Personally, I get all of my essential oils from Young Living because they are the longest and most established essential oil company. They are the only company that owns their own farms, grows their own crops, and distills all of the oils themselves. They also have a “Seed To Seal” promise which basically means that nothing is altered at any point from the time the oil is a seed to the time it is sealed in your bottle. Basically…it’s the best of the best!
Okay, now let’s get on with it…
DIY Non-Toxic Bug Spray:
In a 2 oz. glass spray bottle, combine:
- 10 drops of Citronella
- 10 drops of Tea Tree
- 5 drops of Peppermint
- 5 drops of Eucalyptus Radiata
- 5 drops of Lemongrass
- A splash of witch hazel (I recommend this one because it is alcohol-free and contains no chemical fragrance)
After that, all you have to do is fill the rest of your spray bottle with water, shake it up, and it’s ready to use! So easy, right?! Cheers to a bug-free summer!
If you don’t have your oils yet but would love to get your hands on some, you can order them here. Or, if you would like some more information first on how I got started with essential oils and why we love them, you can read more about that here.
